Zakopane together with the Polish Ski Association and Tatra Ski Association have begun making efforts to be granted the right to organize FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 2015.

In the following decades, the city hosted skiers from all over the world. Zakopane organized FIS World Championships three times (in 1929, 1939 and 1962), Winter Universiade three times (1956, 1993, 2001), World and European Championships on Biathlon, World Cup in ski jumping several times, Nordic combined, cross-country and slalom, Continental Cups in ski jumping, Summer Grand Prix in ski jumping on PVC. International competitions of various importance are held here every year.

Zakopane has aspired to be counted among the group of cities organizing world sport events. The crowning achievement of this aspiration was the submission of the city's candidature for the organization of Winter Olympic Games in 2006. Zakopane was already applying for organization of FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 and 2013. The organization of ski events has been entered into long-term Development Strategy of the City of Zakopane.

VIII World polonia winter olympics have begun!! 03-03-2010

winter polonia olimpicsLast Saturday, on 6 March 2009, the VIII World Polonia Winter Olympics in Zakopane have been officially opened. The President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, who held the event under his patronage, performed the opening ceremony. Gathered participants were cordially welcomed by the City host Mayor Janusz Majcher. After the solemn speeches of the City host and invited guests, the Zakopane sky was illuminated with a colorful fireworks display. The representatives of the world Polonia as well as invited guests enjoyed themselves to the rhythms of the Trebunie Tutki, a musical group well-know to the entire Polonia. In spite of quite a frosty weather, everyone was having a good time and the hot atmosphere warmed up even the coldest participants.
